The bear pit
The bears are cared for in a species-appropriate way by two keepers. They take care of the food, muck out the stalls, clean the enclosure and make sure that the three feel comfortable. The bears' diet is mainly vegetarian: each bear eats about 25 kg of fruit, vegetables and cereals every day. Please do not throw food into the bear pit, you are endangering the health of the animals!
You can also watch the animals online - with the Bear cam of the Torgau Bear Foundation
The long tradition of keeping bears at Schloss Hartenfels began in 1425 and was only interrupted in the 18th century. Since the 1950s there have been bears in the bear pit again, currently the three brown bears Jette (*1988 in Torgau), Bea and Benno (*2013 at the Wildlife Park Gangelt in North Rhine-Westphalia).
